Intel’s 600/700 series motherboards based on the LGA 1700 will become obsolete in 2024. The 15th generation Arrow Lake processors will be released alongside the LGA 1851 boards in the second half of next year.
According to RedGamingTech, existing AM5 boards will support two more generations, including Zen 5 at the end of 2024 and Zen 6 in 2026. This is similar to Intel if we consider the 14th generation Raptor Lake Refresh as a full update.
Even the cheapest A320 motherboards, released in 2017, support Ryzen 7 5800X3D, one of the latest AM4 processors. This means up to five years of platform support, even for very cheap boards priced around $100. If the Ryzen 9000 (2024) based on Zen 5 and subsequent Zen 6 chips (2026) turn out to be the last supporting the 600-series chipsets, this means three years of support, which is half as long as AM4.
Some time ago, AMD executives promised platform support until 2025, which does not confirm compatibility with Zen 6. This was a cautionary note meant to avoid any unrealistic expectations from buyers, similar to what happened with the launch of Zen 3.
