Huge test of almost 180 Core i9-14900K and Core i9-13900KS

Core i9-14900K:The test aimed to determine which model overclocks more efficiently and with less energy consumption to achieve the manufacturer’s claimed 6 GHz clock speed, and which has a higher potential for additional overclocking.

Core i9-14900K

Both the Intel Core i9-14900K and Core i9-13900KS are essentially the same processor with nearly identical standard frequencies. Intel claims that both chips can operate at a frequency of 6 GHz. However, for processors with such high clock speeds, binning, or the process of sorting crystals during production, in which more successful and high-performance chips are separated from less successful and performant ones, is a crucial factor. Although the Core i9-14900K is newer, it does not have the “KS” suffix, which would indicate a select status. Nevertheless, a large-scale test by Igor’s LAB involving more than a hundred Core i9-14900K processors shows that it is better suited for overclocking than the Core i9-13900KS.

Core i9-14900K

Igor’s LAB tested 154 examples of the Core i9-14900K(F) and 24 samples of the Core i9-13900KS model. Although the sample size was not as large as it could have been, it still produced interesting results. The methodology of this test was quite simple: place the processor on a test bench, read the voltage-frequency curve, and record the voltage required for each chip to reach 6 GHz, i.e., the maximum frequency of automatic overclocking for the Core i9-14900K and Core i9-13900KS.

Despite having only 154 samples of the Core i9-14900K, a clear bell curve showed that the chip on average required a voltage of 1.468 V to reach the 6 GHz frequency mark. In the worst case, the processor required 1.508 V for this result, and in the best case, only 1.398 V. In contrast, the best result for the Core i9-13900KS was a voltage of 1.433 V, allowing the chip to reach a frequency of 6 GHz, significantly worse than the best result for the Core i9-14900K. However, 11 out of 24 samples of the Core i9-13900KS reached the 1.488 V mark, roughly indicating the average voltage needed by the 13900KS to operate at a 6 GHz frequency.

Notably, the best samples of the Core i9-14900K were obtained from batch X337R173. All the Core i9-14900K samples tested were produced at the same factory in Vietnam. Even the worst processor from the “R” batch was better than the best processors from any other batch. Of the five other batches, four had almost the same quality, while the last batch of chips was noticeably worse than the other six.

The test results and the fact that the Core i9-14900K is already setting new world overclocking records convincingly indicate that it uses higher quality binning. Igor’s LAB notes that Core i9-13900KS processors from a batch released last year were on average slightly better than chips released this year.

It’s important to consider that the manufacturing process and the quality of silicon used can significantly impact a processor’s overclocking capabilities. Binning is a common practice where manufacturers test and classify processors based on their performance characteristics. Higher-binned chips often show better overclocking potential due to higher-quality silicon, which allows for higher speeds at lower voltages, contributing to more efficient energy use and heat management.

In summary, the Core i9-14900K appears to offer superior overclocking potential compared to the Core i9-13900KS, likely due to more rigorous binning processes and the quality of silicon used in its manufacturing. This makes it a preferable choice for users seeking to maximize performance through overclocking.
