Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super Review

The GeForce RTX 4070 Super is one of the best current Nvidia graphics cards available today. Tests of this new product have shown that it offers great value for its price. However, it is not the most cost-effective option on the market.

RTX 4070 Super

As we’ve already seen today, the GeForce RTX 4070 Super is noticeably faster than the RTX 4070 in 3DMark benchmarks, but it doesn’t quite reach the performance of the RTX 4070 Ti. Now, on the eve of its market launch, reviews of the new Nvidia product have been published. We will base our discussion on the TechPowerUp review, which is one of the most comprehensive and detailed. According to our colleagues’ tests, the RTX 4070 Super is 14-15% faster than the RTX 4070, depending on the resolution. Meanwhile, the RTX 4070 Ti is only 6-8% faster than the new card, which is a relatively minor difference, and this gap narrows even further with overclocked Super models.

In comparison with AMD cards, the new Nvidia product is slightly faster than the Radeon RX 6900 XT and more noticeably outperforms the new RX 7800 XT. However, the latter is still cheaper.

Regarding ray-traced gaming without upscaling, things are not so straightforward. In Full HD, the new RTX 4070 Super is faster than any AMD card except for the top-tier RX 7900 XTX, with which it is on par. In 2K, the RX 7900 XTX is ahead by 5%, but the new Nvidia card is still faster than the more expensive RX 7900 XT. However, in 4K, the new card seems to be limited by memory capacity and bus width, resulting in even the RX 7900 XT outperforming it by 15%, and the XTX by as much as 35%.

In terms of power consumption, the new card performs well. It consumes more than the RTX 4070, but only about 220 watts, which is less than the RTX 3070 or even the RX 7700 XT.

In conclusion, Nvidia has produced an excellent graphics card. In terms of price-to-performance ratio, it, along with the RTX 4060/4060Ti/4070, is the best offering in the RTX 40 series, although it is still outperformed by the RX 7700 XT and RX 7800 XT.

If the new model is compared with the now $550-priced RTX 4070, the Super model is slightly more advantageous.

GeForce RTX 4070 Super: A Comprehensive Overview

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super is a remarkable addition to the GeForce RTX 40 series, leveraging the Ada Lovelace GPU architecture. This graphics card, built around the AD104 chip, strikes an impressive balance between performance and efficiency, offering a compelling option for gamers and creators alike.

Architectural Highlights and Performance:

  • GPU Architecture: Utilizing the Ada Lovelace architecture, the RTX 4070 Super shares foundational technologies with its higher-end counterparts. This includes support for DLSS 2/3/3.5, NVIDIA Reflex latency reduction, NVIDIA Broadcast, Ansel, G-SYNC, Omniverse, and optional Studio drivers.
  • Core Configuration: The card features 7,168 CUDA cores, 224 Tensor cores, and 56 RT cores. Compared to the full AD104 configuration, it’s scaled down but still offers robust performance. The typical boost clock hovers around 2,475MHz.
  • Memory Interface: It sports 12GB of GDDR6X memory, operating at an effective data rate of 21Gbps, equating to approximately 504GB/s of memory bandwidth over a 192-bit memory interface. This configuration provides ample speed and capacity for demanding gaming and creative tasks.

Design and Build:

  • Cooling System: The RTX 4070 Super Founders Edition comes with a dual-fan, pass-through design, optimized for a smaller form factor. Its all-black design and compact dimensions (approximately 9” in length and requiring only two slots) make it a sleek and practical choice for various PC builds.
  • Efficient Heat Management: Featuring dual axial fans and a split heatsink design, the cooling system is engineered to effectively manage the thermal output. One fan is positioned directly over the heat plate covering the GPU and memory, ensuring efficient heat transfer and dissipation.

Gaming and Creative Performance:

  • Ray Tracing and DLSS: The RTX 4070 Super excels in ray-traced gaming scenarios, offering competitive performance even against top-tier AMD cards. Its support for NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology ensures games run smoothly with high visual fidelity.
  • Energy Efficiency: Despite its powerful capabilities, the RTX 4070 Super maintains efficient energy consumption, offering a balance of performance and power usage that outshines many of its competitors.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Super stands out in NVIDIA’s lineup for its adept balance of power, efficiency, and feature support. Its architectural strengths, combined with a sophisticated cooling design, make it a versatile choice for both gaming enthusiasts and creative professionals. This graphics card demonstrates NVIDIA’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in modern GPU technology, offering a compelling blend of performance and value.
