Both chip manufacturers will present their next-generation chipsets in the third quarter, followed by the launch of the processors. Intel is expected to release the 15th generation Arrow Lake family, which will compete with the AMD Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 lineup.
For AMD, this is a relatively straightforward launch, as the same AM5 socket will be implemented with additional features for the next-generation 700 series chipsets. You can expect more PCIe Gen 5 lines, higher DDR5 speeds, Wi-Fi 7, and much more. Unlike the 600 series launch, it should be smooth, as the microcode does not need to be created from scratch. Only one old generation needs to be prepared for backward compatibility, which should not be a problem.
For Intel, it will be more complicated. Team Blue plans to release the LGA1851 socket along with the 800 series chipsets. You can expect the same updates as AM5, including more PCIe Gen 5 lines, Wi-Fi 7, and higher DDR5 memory speeds. Unlike AM5, the Z790 chipsets already support memory overclocking up to 9000 MT/s and above, giving Intel an advantage in this segment.
At the same time, it’s worth noting that the 15th generation Arrow Lake processors will be Intel’s first desktop computer family based on chiplets. Several optimizations are required to improve memory/cache bandwidth/latency and the CPU ring bus, which in Meteor Lake seems suboptimal.
